ARTIFACT #1-SAMPLE OF SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT
Below is a summative assessment I used at New Brighton. The questions in this activity are based on the tiered readings included in standard 2. Each version of this reading provides the answers to the same set of questions. These questions model the types of questions the students could see on the ELA PSSAs. The purpose of the Holocaust unit was two-fold---to teach students about the history of the Holocaust and help them work on answering text-dependent analysis questions. This is a basic skill that will be valuable for them as they continue into High School and potentially beyond.

ARTIFACT #2-FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT
Below is an image of a formative assessment I used at Rochester. The students worked on this over a period of two days. As a class, we watched three different film interpretations of the opening of Macbeth. The students selected two of these interpretations to analyze in detail. This activity took place after the students read the first scene of the play for themselves. The assessment helped evaluate the students' understanding of the text we were reading and their ability to analyze film interpretations of a drama. I was grateful that my students loved this activity and that it helped the text come alive for them.
