ARTIFACT #1-STUDENT ATTEMPT AT GENRE OF GRAPHIC NOVEL
This assignment took place during a unit at Rochester on Art Spiegelman's graphic novel Maus. The students were instructed to create an autobiographic comic panel based on a real situation in their life. Below is a student's representation of a season where she mourned her grandmother. As part of the assignment, students were instructed to write a paragraph explaining the content of their comic and analyze what it was like to use the graphic novel medium. This assignment was intended to show students that literature has the power to depict real life and consider serious issues. It was used to empower students by having them decide in writing what connection art has to real life.
ARTIFACT #2-STUDENT ACTIVITY ABOUT TOPIC THEIR ROLE IN NEW BRIGHTON
Below is an image of a formative assessment I used at the end of a lesson at New Brighton. This took place after a lesson I taught about New Brighton's role in the Underground Railroad. This activity was intended to engage the students with the history of their town and evaluate their understanding of the lesson. In standard 10, I discuss an assembly I created that is related to the Underground Railroad. The mini unit that the below artifact is from was used to prime students for the guest speakers in the assembly. The mini unit was about abolitionism. The students did a reading about Harriet Tubman and spent time reading several articles about New Brighton's role in the Underground Railroad.
